The Perfect Weekend in Sunderland
A two-day itinerary that takes in the best the city and coast have to offer
Sunderland is one of those cities where the brief visit keeps extending itself — one good thing leads to another, and before you know it you are planning to come back. This itinerary is designed for a weekend arrival on Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, and covers the city's highlights without feeling rushed.
Friday Evening: Arrive and Explore the Riverside
Check in, settle into your accommodation, and head down to the Riverside Sunderland quarter for the evening. The restaurants and bars along the Wear have grown dramatically in recent years, and there is now genuine choice — from relaxed craft beer bars and independent pizza restaurants to more refined dining. The walk along the riverbank in the evening, with the bridges lit and the old buildings reflected in the water, sets up the weekend perfectly.
Saturday Morning: Roker and the Pier
Start Saturday with breakfast and then drive or take the bus to Roker. The beach is wide and clean — walk the length of it before heading out along the Victorian pier. On a bright morning, the light off the sea and the views back to the city are extraordinary. The Roker Café does an excellent breakfast and is a perfect spot to watch the world go by before heading onwards.
Saturday Afternoon: National Glass Centre and the Museum
Return to the city centre and spend the afternoon at the National Glass Centre. The glassblowing demonstrations alone are worth an hour of anyone's time, and the gallery is genuinely impressive. Walk from there to the Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens — the museum's collection covers everything from local history to fine art, and the Winter Gardens are free and wonderful. Allow two to three hours for both.
Saturday Evening: Dinner and the City
Saturday evening in Sunderland is increasingly vibrant. The city centre has a growing range of independent restaurants, and the area around Fawcett Street and High Street West has been transformed in recent years. Try the Bridge Tavern by the river for a relaxed evening, or explore the independent bars around the Sunniside quarter.
Sunday Morning: Durham Day Trip or Coastal Walk
Sunday offers a choice. The morning train to Durham takes twenty minutes and lands you in one of the most beautiful small cities in England — the cathedral, castle, and riverside are stunning in morning light. Alternatively, drive south to Seaham and walk a section of the Durham Heritage Coast before heading home. Either option makes for a memorable final morning.
Sunday Afternoon: Home via Penshaw Monument
If you are driving home south or west, make a slight detour to Penshaw Monument — a full-scale replica of the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens, sitting incongruously and magnificently on a hilltop above the Wear Valley. It is one of the most unexpected and striking landmarks in the North East, and well worth the ten-minute deviation.
